Robby Gordon denies he's buying Yates team

Robby Gordon Motorsports denied Tuesday that it had agreed in principle to purchase underperforming Robert Yates Racing.

"The rumor that we have consummated a deal to purchase Robert Yates Racing is just that, a rumor," said John Story, RGM's general manager and CEO. "For months we have been talking to multiple sponsors and teams, and while one of those teams is Robert Yates Racing, we have not purchased Robert's program."


Story said Robby Gordon Motorsports has spoken to a number of teams about the idea of joining together and combining resources in order to compete against the larger teams.

"In today's NASCAR, great people and multiple teams are two of the requirements needed to win a championship and there are really only two ways for us to get there," Story said. "The first is to find additional marketing partners for a second, third and fourth car, and the other is to align with another team that is interested in the same opportunities."

RYR is in turmoil. Neither of its regular Cup drivers, Dale Jarrett and Elliott Sadler, will return in 2007. Jarrett announced earlier this season he will be joining Michael Waltrip Racing, and Sadler drove his last race for Yates in Sunday's AMD at the Glen.
